Bastille Bakery

Katong–Joo Chiat has always been a neighbourhood where heritage meets fresh ideas — and now, it has a brand-new French bakery to add to the mix. Bastille Bakery recently opened its doors, offering everything from rustic loaves and buttery viennoiseries to elegant French desserts that look almost too pretty to eat.

A Taste of Paris in the East

Stepping inside, you’re greeted by the comforting aroma of freshly baked bread and coffee. The display counter is a feast for the eyes: golden pain au chocolat, flaky croissants, and almond cream croissants generously topped with toasted almonds. For those looking for something more savoury, the quiches — Quiche Lorraine Classique or Quiche with Sautéed Shiitake — are hearty options perfect for brunch or a light lunch.

Pastries That Steal the Show

If you have a sweet tooth, the dessert counter will stop you in your tracks. Rows of delicate éclairs, raspberry almond tarts, and glossy lemon tarts line the case, each one crafted with a precision that speaks of true French pâtisserie tradition.

Coffee and More

Pair your pastry with a cup of coffee — whether it’s a cappuccino, latte, or a classic French café. If you’re planning to linger, their paninis and bread loaves make it easy to turn a quick pastry stop into a satisfying meal.

On my first visit, I went straight for the almond cream croissant. Crisp on the outside, fluffy within, and filled with just the right amount of almond cream, it was a little slice of Paris right here in Katong. Paired with a hot tea, it made for the perfect mid-afternoon break. And honestly? I can’t wait to be back to try the rest.
